The reasons for the obligation

Cartotecnica Ghio always pays great attention to industry regulations: we would like to highlight the novelty recently introduced with the D.Lgs. 116/2020 in which the mandatory marking of packaging has been established "in order to identify and classify the packaging".

The legislation aims to promote the waste sorting and the subsequent recycling of packaging by providing consumers with precise information on its destination after use, through precise symbols and words. In detail, it is stipulated that "all packaging must be appropriately labelled according to the procedures established by the applicable UNI technical standards and in accordance with the determinations adopted by the Commission of the European Union".

The coding provided by the 97/129/EC Decision is graphically represented by three arrows forming an equilateral triangle, a number and the abbreviation of the material, "PAP", which stands for PAPER (paper).
The following codes must be used for paper packaging:
  • PAP 20 for corrugated packaging;
  • PAP 21 for non-corrugated packaging;
  • PAP 22 for paper packaging of other categories.

For the graphic studios that provide us with the files of the packaging, it is now essential to include the new labelling, which must also be included in any reprints of already used packaging.
Conai (National Packaging Consortium) has published an online tool (e-tag) "to build an environmental label in accordance with the existing regulatory references. This includes the indication to the consumer of the composition of the packaging material, how to deliver it at the end of its life for quality waste separation, and other information useful to characterise the packaging from an environmental point of view (recyclability, compostability or recycled content)".
